Freedom is ringing and so is the music! Although every day in America is independence day, there’s only one 4th of July. All year ‘round, we look forward to barbecues, fireworks, patriotic music, and, of course, wearing gloriously tacky red-white-and-blue outfits. Nothing compares to a picnic with friends and family under the nearest fireworks show. Now that America’s birthday is upon us, Happy Birthday isn’t the only song we should be singing: these are 15 songs that are crucial to your July 4th playlist!
Warning: There’s lots of country music on this list.
1. “Courtesy of the Red White and Blue”, Toby Keith
You don’t get much more patriotic than this song. It will literally light up your world “like the 4th of July”. In fact, I hear even Uncle Sam put this song at the top of his list—his playlist that is.
2. “Party in the USA”, Miley Cyrus
I think you saw this coming. “Party in the USA” is one of the many anthems of our generation, and no 4th of July celebration would be complete without belting this smash hit from the top of your lungs!
3. “Firework”, Katy Perry
Speaking of generational anthems, this one’s a biggie. You can’t just shoot off fireworks without blasting the song named after them!
4. “Made in America”, Toby Keith
Yep, more Toby Keith. You may not be big on country music (I realize it doesn’t appeal to everyones taste), but you can’t deny that Toby Keith has written some bomb American Pride songs. “Made in America” expresses the American values we all hold dear! We a’int prejudiced, we’re just made in America.
5. “Surfin’ U.S.A.”, The Beach Boys
Not only does this song emulate summer, it’s also about all of America coming together for one thing—surfing!
6. “Sweet Home Alabama”, Lynyrd Skynyrd
This may not be the most patriotic song in terms of American pride, but it’s a classic, and it’s all about home! What better song to play when you’re trying to celebrate your homeland?
7. “Chicken Fried”, Zac Brown Band
Once again, we celebrate American values with “chicken fried, cold beer on a Friday night, a pair of jeans that fit just right, and the radio up”. It’s all about having a good time, enjoying the simple things, and being grateful for the freedom we all cherish!
8. “American Ride”, Toby Keith
Last one, I promise! That’s a lie, there will definitely be more Toby Keith on this list…but you’ve gotta love Toby Keith, just like you’ve “gotta love this American ride!”
9. “American Soldier”, Toby Keith
Oh look, there he is again! I dare you to listen to this song without your internal American pride levels doubling (disclaimer: this is not possible). It’s a sobering reminder that “freedom don’t come free”, and it will make you wan’t to hug and personally thank every American Soldier that has ever lived.
10. “Sweet Caroline”, Neil Diamond
You can’t go wrong with this classic. It’s nearly impossible to not get hyped up when you hear those first few notes, and sing along to the chorus with everyone else!
11. “Made in the USA”, Demi Lovato
With killer vocals and a fun beat, this is the perfect party song. And it never hurts to compare something strong to something made in the USA, especially on July 4th.
12. “This Land is Your Land”, Woody Guthrie
A classic song of American pride and love for the homeland, this song completes any 4th of July Playlist!
13. “Summer of ’69”, Bryan Adams
Oh look, another classic! It’s all about summer living and youthful freedom, themes that tend to resonate well on Independence day.
14. “Drunk Americans”, Toby Keith
You thought you were going to get out of this without any more Toby Keith, didn’t you? Well, no July 4th playlist would be complete without “Drunk Americans”. This song celebrates the unity of everyone in this great nation, and how it doesn’t matter where you’ve been or what you’ve done—we’re all Americans, “and we all sing it wrong, but we all sing along!”
15. “God Bless the U.S.A.”, Lee Greenwood
This song is perfect for the end of your fireworks show. Everyone knows this sing, and the amount of patriotism is tangible. Just listening to “God Bless the U.S.A.” will increase your American pride tenfold. You can’t justify leaving it off your playlist.
