College. A time where we all leave our hometowns, friends, family, and pets to start a new life in a different setting. We all come to college, at first, knowing almost no one (except your roommate of course), but we soon start to meet new people. We get to know people that come from different backgrounds. Before we even get a chance to extend our hand and introduce ourselves, our mind automatically assumes something about that person.
Someone has once said, “Never judge a book by its cover.” That is absolutely true. Everyone has most likely been guilty of judging someone based on appearance or on what others have said to them about that person. I even admit that I once judged someone based on certain opinions. However, I’ve come to the point where I shouldn’t because of my own experiences. For example, someone could be saying something about you to another person and they actually believe them. My question is, do they really know you as a person? Have they ever taken the time to actually get to know you, instead of listening to what someone says about them? In life, sometimes you can have a falling out with an old friend or acquaintance, and it could hurt you or it could motivate you. You may ask how it can motivate you. It can by not caring what other people think about you, and not letting others tear you down with their lies. You are the only person that knows yourself best and better than anyone else.
We shouldn’t judge people based on their appearances either. Yes, in college you are going to be quick to judge someone based on what they have. If someone has a luxury handbag, you obviously are going to go straight to the conclusion that they are rich or a snob. That may not be the case. You don’t know everyone's story just by looking at them. It is OK if anyone reading this has done that once in their lives; even I’m guilty at that.
In general, I think we should not judge people by appearance or even by what we hear from others. We shouldn’t because it can hurt a person and make them think that they are less than the person they thought they were. No one does not deserve to go through the thought of questioning who they are as a person. Everyone at some point in their college journey is still trying to figure out who they are as a person. Until then, I think that we shouldn’t judge, because if we didn’t, we wouldn’t have to go through some much drama and stress, and I think this is where I am going to end this. Next time you hear gossip about someone you don’t know or judge people about their appearance, take a step back and think about how this is affecting that person.
