If you ask almost anyone on the street about journalists, youāre probably going to get hear that theyāre biased, that each news source and journalist leans a certain way, tthe media slants every news story to fit their own agenda. And while this may be true to an extent: eg. FOX is conservative, MSNBC is more liberal, CNN while not as bad as MSNBC still tends to be more liberal, this isnāt the case for all journalists or media outlets.
I am studying journalism and I hope to one day become part of the media, and I am not a biased reporter. Although I do have my own beliefs and political leanings, I do not let them affect my work. I pride myself in being an unbiased reporter who reports on the facts. And I know there are others out there.
While at college I have met a lot of other journalism students and Iāve heard each one say that they donāt consider themselves a biased reporter and hope never to become one. I think this is a normal thing.
Most reporters donāt intend to become biased. While someoneās dream job may be to work for a media outlet that leans a certain way, that doesnāt mean that they want to embrace every one of its leanings.
So when someone tells you they want to be a journalist that doesnāt mean they will be biased and try to set their own agenda with their reporting. It probably means that they want to be a reliable source that people can turn to when they want factual news. This is what most journalists want.
So as a journalist and hopefully future professional Iād really appreciate for people to stop thinking of journalists as only biased. I want my career to be taken seriously because it is a serious career if you want it to be. And not every journalist is biased and pretty much all donāt intend to be when they enter the field.
