Before I even entered college, there was always this idea that to find "your people" you should join a sorority or a fraternity. There were these claims that your membership dues would not just go to cute t-shirts and service projects, but rather that it would fuel your group of friends for life.
So you are telling me that for $500+ dollars a semester I can create lifelong friends?!
Sounds enticing, does it not?
For me, the hefty price tag and concept just did not sit right. (Also, I am not here to bash sororities and fraternities, they can do great things for certain people and give them a stable base and a way to get involved in campus life- which I am all for!)
I knew there just had to be another way to feel connected to the student body without breaking the bank or dedicating all of my time to one organization. And that is when I decided to apply to Ohio State's activity board. Even as a new freshmen, it was obvious how widespread their impact was on campus, and I knew I wanted to be a part of that. In the back of my mind, I knew there was no guarantee that I would get in, as the application process was quite rigorous, nonetheless, I took my chances and ended up getting in!
Almost one semester into college, I can easily say that it was one of the best decisions I have made since I have been here. In our group of 150 students of all ages and backgrounds, I have already found friends for a lifetime, and I have found a support system within my committee with people who will encourage me and lift me up when needed.
Not only were the old members extremely welcoming and inclusive, but the executive board made an effort to know each and every one of our names. I was completely stunned. I always imagined that there would be this type of hierarchy where you would have to work your way up the ladder in order for people to make an effort to get to know you.
I have never been surrounded by a larger group of open minded, inclusive, and ambitious individuals in my life. I know that in a week from now or even a year from now, I will never regret joining this organization. It has made my transition to college that much easier and a whole lot more exciting. I am thoroughly looking forward to the next three and a half years spent with some of the best people in this world!
Do not ever feel like you need to join a sorority or fraternity just to find a place of stability and comfort, I hope you explore your options and find a group of people you love just as much as I do.
