What Job Searching is Like in the Middle of a Global Pandemic

As a soon to be college graduate, I have started networking for a job. As a college student, I am also open to and looking for internships. Here is what my experience has looked like so far searching for jobs in the middle of a global pandemic.

What Job Searching is Like in the Middle of a Global Pandemic

A Lot of Companies Just Won't Answer You

To get the two internships I have this summer (yes you heard me right, two) I had to apply to well over 60 internships.

In normal circumstances, this actually isn't too far off as many internship programs will get hundreds or thousands of applications and just can't answer everyone (or can they?). However, I definitely noticed that it was much much harder to get interviews, responses or offers. That being said, I started the process early and just kept applying, interviewing and networking until something came my way.

When it comes to applying to an actual job, however, you do not want to apply too early, as companies do not want to take the time to interview you just to hear that you can't start for another six months until you finish school.

That being said, with the circumstances of the world quite literally having fallen apart around us, I recommend networking and making connections up until it is a reasonable time frame for you to start applying to jobs!

Use Remote Work To Your Advantage

While working from home can mean eating actual meals, staying in your pj's all day and sleeping in later, there are a lot of reasonable advantages to remote work!

First and foremost, you aren't wasting time commuting anywhere. This also means that you will not be running from one thing to the next completely overwhelmed and exhausted. Use this extra time and energy to your benefit! Maybe take the time to do that bedroom renovation you've been putting off or finally going for a picnic in the park.

In addition to giving you more time, working from home also gives you the benefit of working for companies or locations you otherwise would not be able to work for. This gives you the availability to extend your horizons and options when it comes to work, which is absolutely wonderful.

When applying to jobs, use any computer skills and knowledge to your advantage. Also use the increased level of flexibility to your advantage!

Lastly, working from home gives you the opportunity to create your own schedule and availability. With being at home and everyone being in completely unprecedented times, it is totally up to you how you manage your schedule. Maybe this means starting your day at 10 rather than 9 to give yourself time to sleep in before going on your morning run. Maybe it means ending your day at 5 instead of 6 to spend more time outside in the daylight. Whatever it is, take advantage of not being cooped up in an office all day!

A Lot of Companies Just Aren't Hiring Right Now

Something that I've noticed now compared to previous job searches is that there just aren't as many positions available right now. If you're unable to find a job right now, keep in mind that we are in completely unprecedented times and that if you're struggling to find work, odds are it has nothing to do with you personally! I'm sure you are doing everything right and I know how frustrating it can be to be rejected or ignored, but be patient! Everything will work out in time!

College is a crazy, beautiful, amazing whirlwind. It is highly popularized in television and movies, but not necessarily in the most accurate way. Yes, there's frats, dingy dorms, raging house parties—but there's also a lot that people fail to mention.

1. If you thought that you knew how to study, you're wrong.

All of your classes aren't taught every day, so professors aren't on your case constantly about reading and memorizing material. Once you get back that "questionable" first exam grade, you'll kick it into high gear and figure out what works for you

Girl With Bleached Hair
Tumblr

I've been a bleach blonde for over a year now, and let me tell you, it is a lifestyle. More hair appointments, longer showers, and special shampoo. But it is totally worth it!

1. Mentally preparing yourself to convince your hair dresser that white is the way to go.

2. Or the anxiety of what could go wrong by bleaching your hair at home.

3. You could either become a ginger

4. Or a pixie

5. The face you make in the mirror when you take off your towel to unveil the perfect white strands.

6. Taking a million selfies the day you bleached it, because you know your roots will be back in literally 2 days.

7. Having to get bangs or a big chop because your hair is so damaged.

8. Having orange highlights in between touch-ups.

9. Going out for a drink afterwards to debut your updated look.

Despite the struggles, you love your platinum blonde hair! You make sure Instagram knows it, too. You don't need a filter, because the color is flawless by itself!

Finals: just thinking about them gives you anxiety. Only two weeks separate you from summer, but they're the longest of the semester. There's a familiarity to this season, now that you have had so many testing cycles under your belt. But that doesn't quell the ever present stress to pass your finals and your classes. Even better, as a package deal during these wonderful weeks, you get to wake up early to study and you get to take exams that can begin anytime from 7 A.M. to 7 P.M. Now that we have established that this week is not fun, here are some super relatable moments that punctuate finals week.

I've been at this college thing for almost three and a half years, and while I thought that high school was truly the lowest point of my existence, I'm beginning to realize that it was a walk in the park. Like, I miss the days when the biggest white lie I told my parents was my made up excuse about being late for fourth period. These days, the white lies are a tad more complex, and as ashamed as I am to admit it, I've definitely told a few of these.
