This past Sunday, the effectiveness of armed "good guys" was put on display when a gunman opened fire at a church in Texas. Seventy-one year old churchgoer Jack Wilson shot and killed the gunman with his legally owned firearm, ending the shooting in about six seconds. Three died, including the shooter. Had Wilson not been armed, the shooting would likely have gone on for several minutes and many more would have died. The police response for most cities is around five to six minutes. This is undeniably impressive, but not as effective as an armed civilian. There is no denying that Jack Wilson was a hero on Sunday, and that him being armed saved many lives.
This event comes in the midst of many Democratic presidential candidates promoting anti-gun and anti-second amendment agendas. Former presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke promised to confiscate and "buyback" all guns in the country. Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker have both proposed plans which would increase background checks and put in place stricter licensing laws, therefore reducing the number of legally owned firearms in the country.
