In September 2014, I was fortunate enough to receive a bid and the opportunity to found the Eta Tau chapter of Delta Gamma at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia. Because my chapter was new at the time, the founding members had no way of receiving a big. Instead, we were all given a twin (shout out to Erin, my amazing twin!). We went through formal recruitment in January 2015 and many of my sisters received a little, and therefore becoming bigs. Though I knew at the time that I did not have the means to spoil a little, I still wanted that big/little relationship. My wish was granted this past June.
I joined a Facebook group of other Delta Gamma's from all across the country for one purpose alone -- to connect with more sisters and to get an e-big or e-little. Some of the girls who were in this group did not have a great relationship with their chapter big or little, and others just wanted a pen pal for the summer. Everyone sent their bios to the alumna who coordinated everything and we were soon matched with a big, little, twin or a variation of the three.
When I received the email that I was assigned a little, I was so overjoyed! We must have emailed back and forth at least three times a day for a good two months talking about anything and everything. We bonded over dance, DG (duh!), Pinterest and Belgian waffles. We told so many stories from our life through email and Skype. My little is obsessed with Taylor Swift and she told me the story of how she went to Taylor Swift's apartment and got to hang out there with other contest winners. I have to admit that is pretty cool, even if I don't like Taylor Swift.
I never knew that I could bond so much with someone that I have never even met. To be honest, I was a little hesitant at first, sharing details about myself with a person I didn't even know. I mean, this person could be an axe murderer or something. Thankfully, my little is not an axe murderer. She is quite the opposite! Anyway, this just goes to show how strong sisterhood can be. I was able to connect and establish a relationship with a person who lives thousands of miles away from me, and Delta Gamma brought us together.
I am not only thankful for what Delta Gamma has given me, but also for my little, my sisters, and most importantly, my awesome sister Bobbi for organizing all of this. I am confident that if I am ever in New England, my little will come running with open arms. I may or may not ever meet my little in person, but I know one thing is for sure: "Distance can mean so little when someone means so much."
Love ya, little one.
