I have been in a sorority a month and let me tell you something, I have found a home.
After moving from small-town McKinney, Texas to even smaller town West Lafayette, Indiana, I was searching for a group to be a part of. I was looking for a group to push me to be the best version of myself I could be. I was looking for a group that will support me through the rough times of finals week. I was looking for people to become my family over the next four years.
I was looking and I found all of this in Sigma Kappa.
Media makes people believe that a sorority is just paying for friends. There is this stigma that all sorority members just go out and party on the weekend and don't actually do anything to better the community. This is not true. I spent the past weekend at the Walk for Alzheimer's and our chapter alone raised over $10,000, and we were the second biggest fundraising team for the walk. I got to walk side by side with people who have been personally affected by the disease knowing the money we have raised will help those walking around us.
I have had the time of my life these first few weeks of school getting to know the girls around me. I have gained friends, football buddies, and roommates for the next two years. I have people who I know I can call in the middle of the night with an issue or a funny story. Most importantly, I know for a fact if I never needed anything, I could call ANY of these girls and they would be there in an instant. When you pick up and move across the country like I did, people like this is exactly what you need.
People will sit there and tell you all these terrible things about a sorority and why you should avoid them during your time at college. I am here to tell you that joining a house was probably the best move of my college career. Yes, I agree that joining a house isn't for everyone, but I found my family in mine. I have been in this house for a month and I know that this is where I needed to be. I know that the next four years with these girls will be amazing. I am beyond excited to get to know them more and more.
Thank you for the past month, and thank you in advance for the next 4 years.
