Freshman year marks the beginning of a new chapter in many students’ lives. With this new chapter comes many changes, such as being on your own and having to take responsibility for basic things like eating healthy. It is common knowledge that the food courts do not always offer the healthiest options, and those options that are healthy tend to not taste as good as the unhealthy options. Because of this, freshman students usually pack on the notoriously real Freshman 15. While Indiana University does a good job of providing healthy alternatives for students, it’s very easy to gain weight. Here are some tips and tricks for avoiding the unwanted pounds.
Take advantage of the SRSC
This state-of-the-art recreational center is available for all IU students during the majority of the day, meaning there’s no excuse for not finding time to go. The SRSC offers many options for staying healthy, including weights, group exercise classes, and manually powered treadmills. Also, usage of this facility is free, as long as you have a valid student ID.
Be careful of what you eat at the dining halls
That pizza can be tempting, but remember that it’s not the best choice. Repeatedly opting for the fried or greasy food will aid you in packing on the calories, leading you straight to that Freshman 15. Make it a goal to choose salad or get a side of fruit or yogurt to add some nutrients in your diet.
Get fit with your friends
IU offers a ton of intramural sports that are incredibly easy to pick up. All you need is a group of friends and the desire to have a good time. Intramural sports can be competitive or recreational, and you have the option of forming a co-ed team. While there is a one-time participation fee of $60 per team, having the opportunity to be active with your friends and meet new people is worth the money.
Be conscientious of your alcohol consumption
Although IU is very well known for their parties, and it’s easy to find places to drink, be careful of how much and how often you consume alcohol. Even though its fun to go out and have a good time, you’d be surprised with how many calories can be in just one drink. Have fun, and be safe, but remember that alcohol has calories too.
Don't be too dependent on the bus system
While convenient, the bus system can instill habits of laziness in IU students. It’s easy to forget that walking to class can help you burn up to 2,000 calories a day. Go a step further and invest in a pedometer app also. Its scientifically proven that these increase motivation for walking.
Even though its important to eat healthy, don’t forget that its okay to treat yo' self and enjoy your freshman year.
