I would say almost once a week, the normal college student feels as if they don't have their lives together. We try to balance 20 things at once, and sometimes we actually are successful, but this just isn't the time to worry about our future. At this time in our lives, guess what...it is more than OK not to have our sh*t together and here are a few reasons why:
Plain and simple...you're young.
So many times we're asked what we want to do with our lives and so many times, we say we don't know. Don't feel embarrassed or shameful that you don't know. You're young and having fun. These are supposed to be the best years of your life. You won't remember the days where you were actually trying to get your stuff together. You're not supposed to worry about that stuff just yet. My motto is "I'll cross that bridge when I get there." We're still experiencing this thing we call life, so how are we supposed to know what to do with it yet?
Now is the time to semi-figure it out.
And by "semi" I really do mean semi. Your college years are your learning years. They buy you some extra time to figure out what you want to spend the rest of your life doing. We change our majors probably way too often and at the worst times, but for all the right reasons. We take classes all year for one specific area and do immense amount of work only to realize that we have no interest in working in that field post graduation and suddenly, we need to abort mission and change our major. Might happen again somewhere down the road and that is perfectly fine. You are learning yourself and what interests you enough that you would want to spend the rest of your life working in that specific field.
Worrying about what you're going to do tomorrow should be enough to handle.
Especially in college, we have enough to deal with on a daily basis that worrying about the future just seems so irrelevant. Trying to figure out what I am doing tomorrow is more than enough for me to handle.
We're all a bit of a mess. There comes points in our lives where we are literally just trying to survive day to day. We're either too hungry, too poor, or too exhausted to do basically anything. So, thinking about the future gets pushed down to the bottom of the list repetitively. After these four years, there really is no excuse we can make for it anymore, so we might want to pick up all the missing pieces and finally put our lives together.
And for those of you who do have your life together...well congrats, you're winning.
