It Is Time For Our Generation To Grow Up

From the view of an 18-year-old freshman in college, I have noticed just how immature and unfocused our generation can be. So, readers, brace yourselves for a long rant on how it is time for our generation to please, just grow up already.

Yes, some of this generation is incredibly focused and motivated to make the most out of themselves and to help the world become a better place, but I am targeting those who are stuck in a world where they are the only ones who matter, and everyone else is either irrelevant or not as good as them.

Everything we do effects the people around us in one way or another, so why is it that some of us find joy in hurting others? It makes no sense that somebody would purposely do something that they know will hurt a person, just because it makes them feel better about themselves. Our generation is at great fault for this. We find joy in making fun of people on social media. Something about sitting behind a computer screen, nobody knowing who you are, and attacking others is enjoyable to some people. Does it make you feel better about yourself? Do you like the attention? Or do you really dislike yourself that much that you have to go out of your way to point out somebody else's flaws just so yours don't seem as bad? These are the things that our generation is doing to each other. Technology is a wonderful thing; if we use it in the right ways. We can no longer trust or love without the fear of this kind of betrayal.

Now, what is it about drugs and alcohol that makes you "more cool" than you would be if you did not do these things? Personalities are no longer based on how we act, but what we do. Why is a person in college considered "lame" if they would rather stay in than go out and party? Yes, it is important to go out and meet new people, but let others choose just how they want to go about that, instead of judging them because their decisions are not like yours. I cannot begin to count how many times I have been called lame or been given weird faces because I said I did not want to go out and party. How are my decisions to stay in my room and finish my school work going to effect you at all? Why are you so sensitive to MY choices? Also, please tell me how smoking, drinking, and getting so drunk you cannot remember what happened will help you be successful at all? Go ahead, party, be reckless, I do not care, but please, stop judging me for thinking different than you.

We need to stop competing, and work together to make the changes we have always dreamed about. The only way to do this is to simply grow up. Stop worrying about who is talking about you on Twitter, and start focusing on how you are going to support yourself and be successful in the future. We are the generation full of dreams, so lets prove to everyone that we can live up to them because the time is now. No more procrastination. Get focused, work together, and remember to stay true to you, because in the end, you'll only have yourself the count on.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
