Is Trump To Blame For Sexism, Or Rather A Toxic Culture?

A sex-crazed America

The way Americans reacted to Trump’s lewd comments regarding women this past week would make an outsider believe we Americans have a prude culture where everyone keeps it in their pants and our morals dictate society. Who are we kidding? Our past president for God’s sakes was impeached for having sex in the Oval Office, Anthony Weiner, a former U.S. Representative sent genitalia pictures to his mistresses, and Elliot Spitzer, former Governor of New York was caught red-handed in a prostitution scandal. It is impossible to glaze over such blatant sinful ways of Americans. America is, after all, an immoral land obsessed with sex and those within the upper echelons of society are by no means excluded. Given all of our infamy, Americans should not have been surprised by Trump’s derogatory comments and seemingly sexist undertones.

It is my opinion, the critics chastising Trump need to get off their high horse—Trump is just a symptom or outgrowth of a larger than life issue that has been taught via politicians, throughout history, and through pop culture; it has corrupted America for the past millennia and Democrats and Republicans alike have made slim to no efforts to control its consequences. No one is morally superior to anybody else and we are all liable of exacerbating this toxic sex culture and we must change it. We are a culture or many words and little action. This is not a Democrat or Republican problem, it is an American problem. Women too are culpable of allowing this sex-crazed culture to run amuck. We all take a part in exacerbating this virulent culture.

Whether we like to admit it or not women are second rate citizens and we are under sage every day. From the normalcy of song lyrics that condone rape of women and sexual promiscuity, or the clothing that society deems “trendy” and “fashion-forward” that bare a very uncanny resemblance to lingerie, to the disgusting words we use to describe our woman foes-- sluts, bitches, etc. On college campuses and in dating life there is an underlying expectation in the 21st century for women to “put out” or else being shammed as prudes. And then there is porn corrupting the minds of men, promoting sex as casual, submissive, and sometimes violent. At bars and clubs men feel the freedom to go up to women and grope them, grind on them, pinch, and squeeze all without consent. And then there is disgusting hyper- sexualized advertisements of women half naked promoting an obscure, platonic object?

What Trump said was disgusting and concealing the gravity of what he did say is not my intention, but rather to illuminate a culture that is toxic and blinding. This being said, Trump is running for office and using these comments against him is naive. Many a pundits have said he is unfit because a president is the moral leader of a society. I reject this notion altogether; If politicians are dictating your moral compass something is fundamentally wrong and it is time to re-evaluate. Hypothetically, if this were the case, we would all be lying, deceiving, highbrow, two- face elitists who make deals with the devil. America is the land of flawed and immoral politicians. Being president isn't about morals it is about urgency, intuition and street smarts. When you are casting your vote in November your choice should be based on what can be done for America rather than being guided by emotions or character flaws—which it is abundantly clear both have many, many issues.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
