Sunday has passed and once again Cowboys fans are still making it heard, to people who do not want to listen to them, that their 3-7 season is not over just yet. All because of the return of simply one player: the starting quarterback, Tony Romo.
Last Sunday the Cowboys lost another heart breaker to the then 3-5 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The loss seemed like the final nail in the coffin to the formerly highly anticipated Cowboys season.
A season that was supposed to be just as good as their previous 12-4 record became a year plagued with injury to pro bowl starters, and the scandal of the controversial owner, Jerry Jones, hiring the star linebacker, Greg Hardy, who has been proven of domestic abuse towards his ex-girlfriend.
The Cowboys' morale and overall respect from the sports world seemed to have been decimated almost entirely, until this:
This iconic scene from "Major League" was tweeted by Tony Romo on Tuesday and it has single handedly restored hope in Dallas, which is not saying much when taking in account the gullible minds of Cowboys fans.
Now fans believe, “Maybe we can win out and win the whole division with the return of just one player!” Unfortunately a sense of realism does not grace the brains of Dallas fans.
Instead of being hooked in on Romo’s attempt, or should I say successful attempt, for inspiring the feeble fan base, let us look at some actual means for why the Dallas disarray will continue:
- First of all, let us stop the ideal that Dallas was 2-0 before Romo was injured and that means they will go undefeated the rest of the season with his eminent return. Those first two wins were against the currently 5-5 Giants and the 4-6 Eagles. The Giants game was won by a single point and the Eagles game was won by 10 points, but that was when the Eagles looked as dysfunctional, if not more, than the Cowboys.
- Second, the Cowboys team is not the 12-4 team they were last year. After that Eagles win, they have gone 0-7 just because one truly influential player went down with a collarbone injury. The record has proven to the general public that indeed Romo is an elite difference maker, but it has also shown that this team is virtually talentless without Romo. Even with veterans Sean Lee, Jason Witten, and Dez Bryant, the team can absolutely gain no traction towards a simple win without their star QB. And even the mention of losing last year’s best running back, Demarco Murray, is not saying anything because the man has become worthless after being taken by Philadelphia.
- Lastly, Romo has proven to be an important piece to this offense and overall team drive, but the fact of the matter is no single man, especially Romo, can turn around a 3-7 season. The teams in the NFC East may not be very talented but they have all proven to be able to win football games with such bleak rosters and questionable coaching tactics. Even if the Cowboys won out they would need for the Eagles, Redskins, and Giants to all go below .500 the rest of the season. Romo’s career wins percentage for the regular season is .616 so to say he will win out with an already hopeless team is saying more than enough.
Last Sunday Romo led the Cowboys to their first win since the month of September, but even though the game may have reconditioned fate in Dallas, I am not completely sold.
At the end of the day the Cowboys won with Romo throwing two picks and defeating the Miami Dolphins of all teams is no reason to be joyous just yet.
This Thursday will determine if Dallas can truly bounce back and reaffirm their position as NFC East champions.
On Thanksgiving they will be playing the 10-0 Panthers who are coming off an absolute annihilation of the Redskins where the rumored MVP, Cam Newton, threw a career high five touchdowns.
If the Dallas Cowboys can truly pull this off win and show the world they are still alive, they will still need to hope for a miracle of losses to hit their division opponents. Even with that leverage they still need to, “Win the whole f**king thing.”
