This year’s Texas Tech football season has been a roller-coaster of emotions, to say the least. Texas Tech had an amazing start to the season going 4 – 1, even being ranked in the nation’s top 25. However, the team suffered several setbacks, going 0 – 4 in following contests after their brief appearance in the top 25. The most frustrating thing is that the team has shown so much potential at times and they appear to be sleepwalking at others. So this leaves us with the question, is Tech’s season lost?
The answer is, of course, no, not just yet.
Coming off of a heartbreaking loss to Kansas State, it’s hard to stay optimistic about Tech’s chances of making a bowl game. However, there’s still a chance. Tech has a great shot at beating Baylor this coming weekend.
On top of that, the last game of the season against UT should be a competitive one. No one should count Tech out of that game just yet because UT has proven to be very up and down this season. If Tech can win these two games, then they should be headed to a bowl game.
Tech still has a very talented offense that is capable of putting up points at any time. The strength of their offense is the receiving core, which I believe is one of the top 15 in the country.
Tech has a plethora of talent catching the ball this season, led by the wicked-quick Cameron Batson (#13), speedy Keke Coutee (#2), and sure-handed Dylan Cantrell (#14). These guys are game breakers! They have the ability to flip any game when they get the ball in their hands.
Tech’s receivers alone aren’t the only reason that their offense is dangerous. They have a solid running game bolstered a deep corps of running backs. There are two running backs that have really stood out this season: Tre King (#24), who runs like a man on a mission every single time he touches the ball, and Desmond Nisby (#32), who is simply a nightmare for opposing teams to tackle.
Tech’s young and emerging offensive line featuring two juniors, two sophomores, and one freshman has been another big reason that Tech’s offense has been able to develop a solid run game to this point. As the o-line continues to gain experience, look for Tech’s run game to improve even further.
The last reason that Tech fans can have hope this season is Tech’s improved defense. Tech's defense isn’t the best in the country, they’re not amazing, nor are they the best, statically speaking. However, this year’s defense has been performing much better than any Tech defense in recent memory.
The Achilles heel of Tech’s defense has been them getting exhausted from being on the field too long. If the offense can help the defense out by not going three and out or scoring too quickly, then the defense can get more time to rest and recover between series. The defense is also young, with only two seniors starting, and they will continue to improve as the season goes on. The defense is led by playmaker, fan favorite, and Last Chance U star Dakota Allen (#40).
With all of these factors combined, Texas Tech has a very good chance of winning two of their last three games of the season to make it to a bowl game. Tech has all the pieces necessary for them to be competitive in every game they have for the rest of the year. In conclusion, I can say without a doubt that Tech’s season is not lost… yet.
