Is MTV’s 'Scream: The TV Series' Actually Worthwhile?

My thoughts on the revitalized tale of a masked killer.

Based off of the legendary slasher film franchise “Scream,” MTV revitalizes the frenzied tale of a masked killer for a new generation of tech-savvy youth with “Scream: The TV Series.” The MTV television series seems to have both a lot of similarities and differences from the original film franchise. For instance, the MTV series brings new age issues, such as cyber bullying, into the scenarios of the show.

But is it any good?

To better understand what I am talking about, here is a breakdown of a few of my thoughts regarding the show.

Characters

Similar to “Teen Wolf” and many other MTV shows, college-aged plus actors are casted as high school teenagers. Just for reference, Willa Fitzgerald, who plays the lead character Emma on the show, is 25 years old and graduated from Yale University with a degree in theater studies back in 2013. (In my opinion, that sounds like a young business professional, but power to the acting!)

And while the actors definitely do not look like teenagers, the characters still seem to draw me into the show. I think overall the actors on this show do a really good job playing their parts and the characters are interesting and even

relatable at some points. Once you look past the blatant stereotypical teen clichés, the characters’ stories will really draw you in. Bella Thorne’s rather brief performance in the show is alone worth the watch. Plus, Bobby Campo’s charming good looks don’t hurt either.

Plot

The show loosely follows the same structure of the first “Scream” movie. A group of teens are introduced to the viewers, followed by an introduction to a strange masked killer. The story then follows the group of teens as they try and figure out what is going on, all while the killer makes mysterious phone calls and takes out some beloved characters. And the rest is pretty much history… kind of.

The show has a lot of plot twists and interesting character developments that make it an interesting guilty pleasure. It's intriguing to see a newer version of the classic slasher flick encompassing things like social media and FaceTime.

Setting

This show is beautifully shot in various places in Louisiana and is set in the fictional town of Lakewood. The houses in the show are gorgeous, and in my opinion, it’s a nice change from New York or Los Angeles.

Accessibility

It’s on Netflix! Well, season one is at least. But once you binge watch season one, the MTV website has you covered for season two. Or, you could watch it on an actual television if that’s your thing.

Overall Thoughts

The show seems to be geared towards preteens who haven't actually experienced what high school is really like, and yet I'm okay with that. This show of an idealized horror high school is highly entertaining and hilariously teen (whatever that means).

So to answer the question of whether or not this show is worthwhile, I would have to say yes. I have to admit that “Scream: The TV Series” is addicting. It is one of those shows that you just can’t seem to stop watching no matter how cheesy it can be at times. And trust me, it does have its cheesy moments.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

The transition into adulthood is never easy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
