At some point in your college career, you will ask yourself this one question: “Is Greek life right for me?" My answer to that question was an astounding yes! I want to tell you just why you should have the same answer I did, and maybe you will see that Greek life can be right for you, too.
The movies depict of Greek life as a stereotypical club or house that is filled with nothing but young adult alcoholics and sluts. Hollywood has painted the picture that a sorority is only for tall, skinny, bleach-blond girls who are rich from their daddy’s pocket. They would have you believe that frats consist of guys who are total jerks and jocks who are dumber than a stump. However, Greek life is nothing like that. Yes, there are parties, but you aren't forced to go and you are respected if you don’t. Yes, your sisterhood or brotherhood will actually respect you if you chose not to do something.
But Greek life is more than parties. It's truly about finding your home and where you fit. When you make those bonds, they truly are for life and nothing can change that.
You can also find help and support to keep your GPA’s high. Scholarship is very important as well as aiming to be the best you can be. This is exactly what you will find, regardless of what sorority or fraternity you choose. I promise you will wear those letters with pride for the rest of your life. I can honestly say I have sisters who will be there for me at a moment’s notice for the rest of my life. I know this because I would be there just the same for them! I really couldn't have made a better decision when I chose to attend formal recruitment last fall.
I would like to encourage anyone who is looking for a fit in this ever-changing college world to get involved and find their home in Greek life. You can come from all walks of life and find the right people who will support you and carry you through to success. That is really what it is all about. This is the season for informal recruitment and I hope that you will consider getting in touch with your local sororities or fraternities. I promise you it will be worth your while and you will find what you have been looking for. There are not only many leadership opportunities within each Greek life organization, but priceless opportunities and life skills you can’t find anywhere else.
