Almost an entire year since the release of “Star Wars: Battlefront”, we now have a form of Instant Action, which was so beloved in the old games. Officially patched today, ‘Skirmish Mode’ has come to “Star Wars: Battlefront”. Though it may not carry the same name as Instant Action, it is basically the same thing.
One of the biggest gripes with EA’s reboot of the franchise was the lack of fun single-player content. There are the Survival and Battle modes, but they never quite stacked up to the older games and their Instant Action mode. For those that don’t know, Instant Action was essentially like multiplayer: large scale action against many enemies, vehicles and heroes; but just by yourself against AI bots. This may not seem enjoyable to some people but Instant Action was a main attraction for many others.
That being said, how true is Skirmish to the original mode? Well as it is right now, Skirmish mode is only playable on Walker Assault and Fighter Squadron. Personally, I don’t see a big issue with this as I feel Skirmish wouldn’t be fun on any other mode. After having tried it out myself on Walker Assault, I can say without a doubt that it was an absolute blast. I was initially worried that the mode would be lackluster and only offer a minimally fun experience paling in comparison to the multiplayer, but I was proven wrong.
Perhaps the best part about all of this is that the Skirmish update was completely free. Another gripe with the release of “Star Wars: Battlefront” was the lack of content upon release of the game. EA has clearly been listening as they’ve taken steps to provide multiple free updates and maps to the game over the course of the last year. Though many still complain about the lack of content and the paid DLC, it is admirable to see a developer offer free content and still continue to offer free content even after all this time of the initial game being released.
No one knows what’s in store for the future of Skirmish. As it stands now, Skirmish is only available on all of the initial maps and free maps given. It is NOT available in any of the new paid DLC Walker Assault or Fighter Squadron maps. I am hopeful that one day they may be available but I am perfectly fine with what was given now. Regardless of how one might feel about Skirmish, it is certainly a good sign of things to come with the future of “Star Wars: Battlefront” and any installments that may come after. Who knows, we may see an update to the Skirmish mode when the Death Star DLC expansion drops in September.
