What Inspires Me To Write Songs

As some of you, who have known me for almost my whole life, know, I like to write songs. For those who don’t, yeah I write songs. I have written songs now for 8 years and it is a great way that I cope with different situations. I love to write about what I go through whether good or bad. As some of you have seen me walk in to a building at college at night with my back pack and a binder in most cases that’s what I’m doing. It has become such a blessing of mine and I enjoy writing my songs.

The first song I wrote was back in 2008, and it was called “I Won’t Forget.” This song was inspired by a girl who thought the guy would forget about the great memories that were cherished between the two. I wrote the song about how the guy would never forget and that he would always remember the good times. Ever since that point I have started to enjoy writing songs. The genre for my songs is rap and I write rap songs because they are easier for me come up with.

I’m still trying to find beats and music to my songs but I have clues of how I want them to go. As of late I have written something like 42 songs, 5 that are not finished, and like 7 remixes to songs that I like. I would say that my style of writing is that of Eminem, because he raps about life and so do I with some love songs. Actually to tell you the truth, writing songs about struggles and bad times are more effortless than writing about good times and love songs. Just in the fall of sophomore year of college I wrote 10 songs. Most of which were about some bad times that I was going through.

Some of the songs that I write are moving. Meaning they will bring you to tears, possibly. Three songs in particular that moved me were my last three. They always bring me to the verge of tears when I read them because of what they are about. I’m not going to say who or what they are about because they are kind of personal but I’ll give you a gist of them if you ask.

Writing has been with me for a long time and I’m glad that I have it. If you are someone that enjoys writing songs or writing in general be sure to find some inspiration. Ideas for me, like I said, have come from what I go through. So if there is something whether it’s good or bad that inspires you, make the most of them and write about them. You’ll never know what hidden talents you will find.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “Do not be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment.” So go ahead try something new whether it’s writing songs, singing or whatever. A good friend of mine wrote in one of her articles that we should get out of our comfort zones and try new things. So do what makes you feel good and do it proudly. Me personally, I enjoy writing songs and writing for the Odyssey so I’m happy with my situation within writing. Be yourself when you write too, because those styles of writing are what makes you unique and they will make the material more enjoyable for others and for yourself. Who knows, maybe someone will be looking up to you for something that you tried and they will look at you for inspiration.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
