It was sad day on February 10, 2015, just about a week ago, that Jon Stewart announced officially on air that he would be leaving The Daily Show. There was a mix of boo’s and gasps from the audience who just couldn't believe that he was leaving.
Jon Stewart, if you don’t know already, is an American political satirist, writer, producer, director, television host, media critic and stand-up comedian. He is a jack -of-all-trades and has entertained audiences on The Daily Show for over 16 years. As a loyal viewer of The Daily Show, I was shocked by the news of his retiring from the show. He not only kept the news factual and funny, but he busted Fox News on the daily for their ridiculous rumors and biased news. Over the 16 years he was on The Daily Show, Stewart became one of the most important men in news media.
Comedy Central commented saying that they were going to miss Stewart on their network. Rumors of CNN wanting to pick Stewart up on their network have been circling, but no confirmation from Stewart himself yet. Personally, I think Stewart should definitely come back and do his own show. He is such a profound political writer and could definitely be his own boss.
Most people never truly appreciated all Stewart has had to offer. Not only did he make people laugh, but also he was a strong liberal advocate. There are many stories coming out by conservative activists bashing the way Stewart portrayed the news. The reason we need Stewart’s witty political satire is because he not only made fun of conservatives, but also liberals. He found satire in every political party. He knew that liberals were not always right, and pointed the joke at them as well.By doing this, he showed that he was not a bias news source at all. Not only did he make fun of liberals, democrats, republicans, and tea "partiers", but he also made fun of our entire political system. Stewart points out in an earlier video, "liberal and conservative have lost their meaning in America. I represent the distracted center."
The point of The Daily Show was to show us how crazy and idiotic our government can truly be. This is why we need a media source like this one; to show that no political party is all correct and no matter what happens, we can always laugh at ourselves. Thank you Jon Stewart for all of the great times you gave us while presenting the news. We will miss you dearly. One of the funniest lines in his goodbye speech was when he says, “I’m a terrible employee, but in my heart I know it is time for someone else to have that opportunity”.
