What happened in Paris recently is certainly not an unfamiliar topic; the country was left devastated, along with the rest of the world. The threat of radical Islamic terrorism is growing stronger, and there appears to be a mixed response among the American people.
After investigation into who exactly was behind the horrific attacks on Paris this past week, killing hundreds of innocent people, it was discovered that one of the attackers possessed a Syrian passport, and entered Greece as a Syrian refugee. Upon the release of this information, 23 U.S. governors have already made the decision to close their borders and no longer allow the settlement of refugees in their state. 22 of these governors identify as Republican, and only one Democrat. President Obama’s response is one that is quite opposite, allowing 10,000 refugees to enter the country come September in addition to the 1,500 that have arrived since 2011.
Ted Cruz, a 2016 Republican presidential candidate, was asked during an interview about his Cuban father who fled the country to come to United States. The interviewer asked Sen. Cruz how he would feel if his father were trying to enter the country, and was denied access due to the question of whether or not he was a threat. Cruz, without hesitation, responded by saying that this is why it is important to “define what we are fighting.” He said if his father were a “part of a theocratic and political movement like radical Islamism, that promotes murdering anyone who doesn’t share your extreme faith, it would make perfect sense.” You can watch the rest of the newscast that includes this interview HERE. Sen. Cruz’s brings up a good point, that when the motives of this particular group are so inhumane, it is a large risk to allow them across our borders.
ISIS leaders also released a video claiming any nation that takes part in airstrikes on Syria will suffer the same fate as France. The authenticity of the video is still being verified, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security would not comment on it. The French government, however, is still continuing in their airstrikes against Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, and they do not intend to stop. You can view the threatening video HERE.
The unfortunate side of things is that it is impossible to differentiate between a Syrian refugee and a terrorist. How can we be sure the person we are allowing to enter this nation is not behind the next biggest terrorist attack our country has faced? Our country’s leadership is failing to take a strong step towards erasing the threat of another attack, and we currently have a president who cannot even mutter the words “Radical Islamic terrorism.” Obviously, not all Muslins are evil, but it is Muslim extremists that are committing these heinous acts. It is out there, people, and it is important to ensure we take every precautionary measure to protect our families and ourselves from that threat.
The best way we can help those on the other side of the world is doing our part to demolish the organization of ISIS. Our duty is to create a world of peace and security for generations to come, and that future cannot exist with ISIS growing in power with hardly any opposition.
