During the upcoming election, one question has been asked over and over again: "Who are you going to vote for?" The answer is that I am still not sure. Since I turned 18 very recently, that has been the biggest question my family has asked me.
When the primary came and I went to register to vote, I was forced to choose whether or not that I will register as a Republican, Democrat, or as an Independent. I choose to register as an Independent because like most people I don’t agree with all aspects of the Republican party or the Democratic party. Growing up with every election that came and went, my parents were on two different sides. My mom was for who had the same values as her. My dad, on the other hand, was strictly Republican. I don’t know if he has ever voted for a Democrat in all the years that he has been able to vote. That brings us to today: I'm still trying to decide which party I am going vote for.
This election has probably been the worst election to watch since I could understand what was going on during this time of year. In 2004 I remember being excited because President Bush was possibly coming to Brookings, South Dakota. I was waiting with my family to listen to John Thune and President Bush speak. That was the first time that I understood what was going on during the election time period. The next two elections, I came to understand more about the election process and I was able to ask more questions about what was going on. In 2008, I watched the debates for the first time. Since then I have paid closer attention to what was going with the elections. This year, I wish in some ways was not the first year that I get to vote because of what has been going on for that past six months. This is probably one of the most important elections that has come to be.
Choosing which person to vote for has been the hardest part of the entire election. You either choose a businessman that has gone into bankruptcy or a woman that has lied in the past and could lie again while in office. Who knows the right person to choose? Should we vote for third party candidates?
With four weeks until November 8, we will have to see what happens in the coming weeks.
