I remember how angry I was last year when my mom told me she was upset that my siblings and I hadn't put together one of our lengthy, crafty cards for her for Mother's Day. It was my first year away from home! How could she expect me to scrape something together with my siblings over a 300-mile distance?
It’s funny because I wish now that I had.
My mom passed away unexpectedly in the beginning of March. The last communication we shared were texts about Bernie Sanders, which was my conservative mother’s way of saying that she approved of my choice, even though she would never vote for him herself.
Mother’s Day marks just over two months, and I don't know what to expect.
I know that I will be getting concerned looks and texts from those who know, and I’ll have people asking me, “How are you doing, sweetie?”
Will I be able to get out of bed? Will I cry? Will smile in her memory? That I cannot tell you.
I can say, though, with utmost certainty, that I will miss her dearly.
I’ll miss her voice. Her hug. Her silly songs. Her smile. I'll miss playfully arguing over which one of us loves the other more. I’ll miss her missing me. I do every day.
Here’s my request to all of you. If possible, go home. Make your mom a card. Hug her and tell you how much you love her and mean it. Do it for me.
