Meredith Mclver, Michelle Obama's Plagiarizer

You work hard for what you want in life, according to Michelle Obama and Melania Trump.

Melania Trump, otherwise known as the person with the biggest screw-up in the 2016 election, was not exactly born a political prodigy. She grew up in a concrete apartment in Yugoslavia, where she studied design and photography but found most of her success in modeling. Still modeling in her early 40s and designing jewelry, she married the self-made billionaire Donald Trump.

Trump, with his strange hair, small hands, and repertoire of insults and comebacks, has flung himself into the presidential race this year. And along with him came his current wife, Melania. She was tossed into the political campaign, not a politician herself, and expected to give a speech as the prospective first lady, a tradition for potential first ladies. Melania gave her speech a few days ago and has received a ton of scrutiny for it. Why? Well, you probably already know why. Because it was the exact speech given by Michelle Obama during the election race of her husband, Barack.

Millions of people were watching her the night of the speech and due to the plagiarism, even more people have seen her perform it. And now those millions of people have turned against her and have ridiculed her. Constant memes attributing well-known quotes to her as a joke as well as the mockery on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon have drawn even more attention to her and her mistake.

Yet the blame isn’t even directed in the right direction. Political campaigns are infused with speechwriters. While the name Melania was tossed around constantly over the last week, many seemed to ignore one of the same first letter: Meredith Mclver. This name has been ignored by the public and shouldn’t be. As the speechwriter for Donald and Melania Trump, she should be held liable. It was her paid responsibility to write a speech for Melania, and she did not deliver. The speech is one used before.

Mclver claims she was provided with quotes from Michelle Obama’s speech as inspiration for this one, and one thing led to another, and Melania wound up with a speech very similar to that of the current first lady. Yet, a lot doesn’t add up. As a speechwriter for politicians, wouldn’t she have read the speeches of previous candidates? A restaurateur would not open a restaurant without ever having been to one, just as a speechwriter would not write without reading the speeches of previous candidates. Furthermore, as someone writing for a first lady, wouldn’t she have read the first lady speeches? Especially the one she is being inspired by? If it was really an honest mistake, why did she submit her resignation earlier this week?

Last Monday night, Melania made a speech that will go down in history. The entire country watched her flop on national television. Then we went around for the whole week parading around with her name, making a mockery of her for our own entertainment. We laughed at her expense, but the fault was not hers. It was Mclver and the rest of the Trump speech staff’s fault. Those are the ones who should be taking the blame. Not Melania.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
