Today people and big companies only care about one thing: money. Greed has gotten the best of people these days. To be successful does not mean you have to be rich. Sometimes success can be as simple as saving someone's life with your product. How can that not be enough? I saw in the news a little bit ago that the maker of the Epi-pen, an injection for allergic reactions, has raised the price for the pen four hundred and eighty percent. That is crazy; I was totally shocked when I heard.
I have a severe allergy to peanuts and tree nuts, so I need to have an Epi-pen on me all the time. Luckily, my insurance covers most of the cost of the pen. It needs renewed every year because the medicine expires annually. Without the insurance, the pen costs roughly $600-$700. There are millions of people with life threatening allergies, and I am sure some of them can barely afford the prices even before the increase.
A little longer ago, it was in the news that a man monopolized a pill. I don't remember what pill it was or what it was for, but I do remember he wanted to charge thousands of dollars per pill.
Once money becomes more important than saving lives, it is time to reevaluate yourself as a person. If I had come up with these medications to save lives, I'd do everything I could to keep prices as low as possible. We live in a time where money is tight for most families. No one wants to be on medications, but a lot of times they depend on them to live.
Companies do this for medication for other illnesses that might not save your life or cure you, but they can make you more comfortable. For example, people with Crohn's disease and IBS struggle with their illness daily, even when their is medicine to help relieve some symptoms. Unfortunately, the medications cost hundreds of dollars and are not covered by some insurances.
Companies and people should not be allowed to get away with this huge inflation of prices; they are murdering innocent people. They might not be doing the act, but they're helping. Other people might not see this as a big of a deal as I do, but I think that is a terrible choice and I pray companies do not continue to get away with as they have been.
