5 Reasons that Prove the Importance of Traveling
Maria Murra

Traveling has always been a huge part of my life. Discovering new places is always a fun adventure, and let's not forget all the fun photo opportunities! The first time I was on a plane, was when I was a few months old and I haven't stopped traveling since. My family has always made traveling a priority whenever possible, and I couldn't thank them enough for that. Having a grandfather and uncle who are airplane pilots, also gives me good tour guides and trip advisors. My favorite place I have been to is London, England and I hope one day to visit Mykonos, Greece. Currently, I am out of the country and having an amazing time in Cozumel, Mexico! I cannot wait to plan my travels for next summer...

1. The exposure to different cultures is priceless

My father, a huge travel junkie himself, once told me that when you experience new cultures, it is important to not compare them to your own; instead it is ideal to try to immerse yourself and notice the good in everything you do. Experiencing new foods and drinks, can be an adventure of its own. There is even a type of traveling called food tourism! Never be afraid to try a new food, you never know it could be your new favorite food!

2. You will learn more about yourself while abroad

Whether you travel alone or with others, there is so much to learn about yourself. Stepping out of your comfort zone lets you become a person with a very open mind. You will learn that maybe you really like a certain city's atmosphere, or that you are more of a small-town type of person.

3. Traveling is the best way to learn a new language

There is no better way to learn a language and become fluent, without immersing yourself in the language. It's one thing to take a language class, but actually having to speak and hold full conversations to strangers that are native speakers, really makes you learn it. The more you hear and are around people speaking that language, the easier it will come to you.

4. You will learn a lot about history without ever opening a textbook

There are so many places around the world that are so rich in history, especially all throughout Europe. Every place you go has some sort of significance behind it. By just doing some simple googling or even taking a tour, you can learn so much about where you are, what happened there in the past, and how it affects the world today. Of course, this is much more interesting than any textbook could ever be. In fact, I would travel all the time if I could in order to "study for history class."

5. Traveling makes you extremely grateful for the life you live

While you may be living your best life while you travel, there is no better feeling than coming home after being gone for awhile. Once you come back home, you realize many things that you used to take for granted, you should be grateful for (like internet speed or air conditioning) that many places may not have or may not be as accessible.

Go out there and catch that next flight!!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
