With the Presidential election just around the corner, the candidates race to choose a Vice President.

Often times people overlook the importance of the Vice President, particularly when the candidates are always in the headlines. However, the reality is that the Vice President is just as important as the President. The Vice President must have the same knowledge, understanding, concerns and mentality as the presidential candidate (President), so that if the situation arises that the VP must take over, the country will remain in a stable condition.

The Constitution states:

"In Case of the Removal of the President from Office, or of his Death, Resignation, or Inability to discharge the Powers and Duties of the said Office, the Same shall devolve on the Vice President " (Article II, Section 1)

Therefore, at any moment the vice president must be ready to assume the role of president. That means although his/her main duty consists of presiding over the Senate, he/she must be ready to lead the country.

Ultimately, although the presidential candidates are under a close microscope by the public and media, people should be paying just as much attention and concern to who the candidates choose as their running mates.

People cannot and should not undermine the importance of the vice president because they may be looking at their future leader.

The vice president is not someone who just stands next to the president while he gives speeches or someone who accompanies the president on trips -- he/she is the person who may one day become president, and that is a very serious role.

Therefore, we as citizens of the United States have to pay more attention to the big picture and not brush the importance of the vice president under the carpet as something minute.

It's a major decision and one that should be properly chosen by the candidates and supported by the people.
