It is close to impossible to find a young girl that hadn’t played with a Barbie doll from her time as a preschool or elementary school student. Back in the days of snack and nap time I wanted to be a teacher. Still today, I want to be a teacher. What Barbie doll was my favorite? You guessed it, Teacher Barbie.
When you’re young your imagination can drift and dream as far as your mind can imagine. Barbie enables young girls to dream and one day achieve and make their imaginations become a reality, especially with its new commercial that aired Oct. 8, 2015 titled, “Imagine The Possibilities.”
Since debuting March 9, 1959 when Mattel Inc. showed Barbie for the first time at the American International Toy Fair in New York, Barbie has been one of the most popular toys for young girls. She has had over 130 careers, ranging from the Military to Public Service to Business.
The commercial shows young girls in the professions of a professor teaching her class about the brain, a tour guide talking about dinosaurs, a veterinarian asking how her patient’s animals are, a soccer coach running drills, and a businesswoman closing a deal on a new business she acquired. The end of the commercial reveals that these scenes all young girls' imaginations of the jobs they aspire to.
While over the past few years Mattel has come under scrutiny from the media saying that Barbie has an unattainable and unhealthy body that promotes unhealthy stereotypes to young females, I can honestly say Barbie is taking step in the right direction with the commercial. You never know what little girl is being inspired right now by playing with her Astronaut, Firefighter, or U.S. Navy Barbie. This commercial tells young girls all over the world that they can imagine these possibilities.
