It's become a common occurrence when asked what I do for a summer job and my response is "I'm a lifeguard." that I'm typically judged for getting paid to tan all summer. The typical stereotype of lifeguarding comes from the Baywatch movies, with attractive and fit guards that run in slow-motion down the beach.
For those who have never worked as a lifeguard, this may seem to be true. We get to bask in the sunshine for 8+ hours a day, wear two-piece suits, and relax all while getting paid by the hour. However, those who have worked as lifeguards know this isn't exactly the case.
We chose to do this job, just like retail workers, doctors, lawyers, and others choose to do a job. And before one starts a job, certain training must take place. To be a lifeguard, you have to take a class (which is typically expensive) and receive first aid and CPR certification.
Learning how to handle any possible situation that could occur on duty is not an easy task. From little cuts and bee stings to a heart attack to an accident in the pool to a thunderstorm, we're trained to handle it all. Along with that, most pools require lifeguards to clean the pool area and restrooms as well.
So don't tell me I get paid to tan.
As a lifeguard, I have learned to work closely with my coworkers. Yes, there are disagreements and tension at times, just like a normal workplace. We have inside jokes, drama, and know one another's food orders by heart, However, the second someone whistles three times (to signal an emergency), everyone knows that proper actions must take place.
From working at a public pool, I've learned more about people than I'd like to admit. I live in a small town, so when a majority of the population is at the public pool, drama tends to follow. I hear kids arguing on stand, adults complaining about others, and have seen some interesting scenarios. However, I wouldn't have chosen another job to do during the summer. Between warm days, good hours, and (sometimes) great coworkers, it's been a great workplace.
I get paid to tan, but I also get paid to guard the lives of others.
