For those of you who aren't familiar with the soundtrack, If/Then is a modern Broadway musical. Released in 2014 and spearheaded by stars like the wickedly talented Idina Menzel and Anthony Rapp, the musical quickly found its way into the hearts of girl bosses everywhere.
The basic story-line of the show follows a woman as she divorces her husband and moves to New York city to pursue her dreams of being a city planner. Sounds simple enough, right? Yes, until the story delves into the potency of each possibility and choice.
When Elizabeth finds herself caught between two friends asking her to two different events, her life literally splits in two. The story then follows two separate versions of Elizabeth, Liz and Beth, and we see how her seemingly small decision impacted the entire course of her life. Her change between realities is signified by a pair of glasses, and we receive insight into both of their lives.
So how does this pertain to girl bosses?
Liz/Beth is an insanely driven woman. She left her small town life in Arizona to pursue a new life in New York. While, at their roots, Liz and Beth are the same woman, their choices have impacted their personalities.
Beth's story line boasts an extremely successful career. She gets a job as deputy city planner within weeks of being in New York. She has friends, but the only constant is her tumultuous friendship with Lucas. Many of her songs in Act Two reflect on loneliness and a sense of yearning for something outside her workplace. She ends the show running for city council and embracing love.
Liz's story line is more open to fate, love and friendship (nearly) from the get-go. She still has an impressive job as a professor, but places her focus on the people in her life. But with an open heart comes vulnerability. She experiences heartbreak of the most tragic cast and even laments her choices until her friend reminds her it was worth it.
To my #RealGirlBosses, I encourage you to listen to this soundtrack not only for a pump-up jam in the car on your commute, but to be reminded of the lessons it holds. Life isn't just climbing the corporate ladder, just as it is not just blindly following your heart and intuition. This story encourages you to love fiercely and take risks while also promoting hard work and celebrating the fruits of your efforts. Let's all try to balance our inner Beth and Liz and build beautiful, fruitful lives for ourselves.
