If Only My Best Friend Wasn't 749 Miles Away

Distance really doesn't change a thing.

If Only My Best Friend Wasn't 749 Miles Away
Amelia Thomas

People say that absence makes the heart grow fonder and maybe it does, but all I have learned from being so far away from my truest friend is that distance doesn't change anything. She is still the same kind of friend she was when she lived two miles down the road. I still call her when I've had a bad day or when juicy drama happens. She is always the first person I call when the boy I have a crush on says hey to me.

Distance hasn't changed our friendship in the slightest, but these are all the things I wish were still an option for us.

1. Go to movies again.

Going to the movies was our thing. It wasn't a once a week thing either, multiple nights were spent at the movie theatre and honestly our best memories come from the drives to and from some really great and even some really bad 9:00 pm movies.

2. Eat dinner together.

You forget how precious your favorite restaurant is until you can't eat it with your bestie anymore. You know that place you eat at least 4 times a week? Yea, try going again and not having your best dinner date with you... it changes everything.

3. Not study together.

Picture this - night before a huge test, you're sitting at a table with your friend and all of a sudden you're planning a Christmas cruise. Failing out of college just isn't the same on your own.

4. Have someone to go everywhere with you.

Yes you have other friends, but the thing about that one best friend is they never say no when you want to go somewhere. It is just understood that you won't go alone.

5. Get a ride.

Picking you up from class, a date, anything it just isn't the same when you're trying to escape and you have to drive yourself or get another friend to pick you up.

Somethings honestly and truly are not the same without your best friend. Even with other close friends all those things just don't compare. Sure, you have people to go to the movies with or to pick you up or even to go to random places with, but the memories are so much different. There isn't always the chance to say "dude you remember that one time" with another person because you can say it but they definitely will not remember.

Long distance friendships are not fun, but they are worth it. Distance may take them away from you, but a true bestie will stick with you always even if there are hundreds of miles separating you. It helps you appreciate trips to Walmart and movie nights so much more because life far away from your best friend is honestly just empty.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
