An Idahoan Summer

Enjoying the great state of Idaho and realizing we are much more than potatoes (even though we have a potato museum).

An Idahoan Summer

I would argue with anyone that Idaho is the most beautiful state. From our sagebrush covered deserts to the metropolis of Boise to the towering mountains of the Sawtooth Mountains, Idaho has something to offer for everyone. With nearly 84,000 miles of landscape to enjoy, the summer is a perfect time to take a "stay-cation" and take in the beauty of Idaho. Because I grew up in Boise and then went to college in Moscow, I have a great idea of things to do in both places and in between...

1. Attend the Boise Farmer's Market

2. Spend a weekend in McCall enjoying Lake Payette and hiking various trails

3. Tour the caves of Shoshone

4. Go to the Potato Museum in Blackfoot, Idaho

5. Hike the Elk River Falls

6. Camp at Redfish Lake

7. Climb Idaho's tallest peak, Mount. Borah

8. Play in and slide down the Bruneau Sand Dunes

9. Then spend the night star gazing in Bruneau Sand Dunes

10. Swim around and admire the waterfall in Jump Creek Canyon

11. Ascend 5,000 feet up Moscow Mountain

12. Rock-hound for fossils near Marsing

13. Ride the chair lift in Sun Valley and explore the mountain side

14. Travel back in time at the Napoleon Dynamite Festival in Preston, Idaho

15. Visit the historical Basque museum and neighborhood in Boise

16. Discover the beauty of Craters of the Moon

17. Be amazed at the Soda Springs geyser in Soda Springs

18. Hit up the hot pools at Burgdorf Hot Springs by Riggins

19. Raft down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River

20. Pan for gold in Challis

21. Find the sheep bridge just outside of Fairfield

22. Kayak or paddle board through Priest Lake

23. Search for star garnets in the Idaho Panhandle National Forest

24. Marvel at Balanced Rock in Castleford

25. Watch her water-skate, I mean water-ski, ollie-ollie-oxen-free at Lake Pend Oreille

Even though these are just a few of them many wonderful places Idaho has to offer, hopefully this list of spectacular places in Idaho inspired you to get out and tour the state a little this summer. I know that, if I am able to hit up all of these places, I will have the best summer I have ever had.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
