It's summer and I know we're all either sleeping in after a Netflix binge or going to the beach to work on that tan. Perhaps even reminiscing about your freshman year of school. Then it hits you, you actually miss college! Let's face it, every year has its major ups and downs, but you wouldn't trade them for the world. And now that you've stuck your toes in and tested the waters a bit either for the first, second, or even third time, you're ready to dive right in to your upperclassman years. Or for the seniors out there, your last year.
So you're excited and why shouldn't you be? After perhaps dealing with those cramped and crowded dorms, you've hopefully found an apartment for the upcoming year or upgraded to a nicer dorm with some besties. This is perhaps the thing I'm most looking forward to! My own room and more importantly, my own bathroom. Because we can all agree we've earned it, especially after sharing one with up to seven other girls (me). A full-sized bed doesn't hurt either. Not to mention all the possibilities when decorating, and let's not even get into the fact you have your own kitchen. Talk about heaven!
Now that housing is taken care o,f what else could you possibly be excited about? For those transitioning into their upperclassmen years, perhaps the prospect of taking classes that actually have to do with your major (goodbye "intro" classes). Now that a majority of your general classes are done, you can take the classes you're really interested in. For the upperclassmen, it is perhaps the very scary yet extremely exciting prospect of planning for grad school or giving your career a kick-start. You'll start to meet other people with the same interests and major as you and make those important connections. You'll get to meet people who will work in the same field as you. This is also around the time you can dabble and take one or two classes, which have absolutely nothing to do with your major. Who knows, you might end up finding your passion and declare a minor.
Lastly, if you're like me, you might not have gotten super involved in your school. Now that a new year is upon us, it's time to make some big plans! Join clubs, get an on-campus job, run for a seat on a board, and so much more. The possibilities are practically endless. Week of Welcome is a great way to see what's out there. Personally, I've already started looking for jobs because I'm just that excited and what better way to further your resume while learning the in and outs of my school? If you too are looking for a job, I suggest you start your search ASAP. Pro-tip: a great way to keep up with the job postings is at USF Careers and Employ-A-Bull.
So enjoy summer while it lasts, but also remember all of the fun and adventures waiting for you when school starts up again. And of course, get ready to make the best of the coming years.
