I Buy Name Brands, But That Doesn't Mean I'm High Maintenance

Buying name brand things doesn't make someone stuck up.

I Buy Name Brands, But That Doesn't Mean I'm High Maintenance

There are so many different name brands in today's modern society it's so hard to keep up with what they are and who is wearing them. Some are ridiculously expensive, and some are just a tad more than the knock off versions of them. For me, I like buying the name brand stuff because I feel as if it's better quality and it's due to last longer. Just because I choose to pay more for something when I could easily get the knock off version doesn't at all mean I'm "high maintenance."

My family has always thought of me as this because I'd rather have the name brand than the less expensive knock off version. This doesn't go for everything, just certain items like shoes, makeup and clothes. This is mostly because the quality is much better and will last years longer than any knock off, but it's also because society has created this aura that if you don't wear the nicest name brand stuff you're looked down upon. I have always struggled with people and want to be seen as an equal to them. My friends always have the nicest name brand items and I just wanted to be acceptable by them.

In recent years, I learned that it's unhealthy to think I have to have the nicest clothes and makeup brands to be accepted by others. I have been raised in a small area where everyone's opinion of you makes or breaks you, no matter how you feel about yourself. This caused me to try to buy more acceptable brands to wear so people would like me. I was never trying to act stuck up or trying to act like I was the richest person in my town because I was nowhere close to either of those things. I just wanted to be accepted by the general public and strive for popularity. After coming to college, I realized popularity is a giant myth. People will like you for you, not for what you wear or who you hang out with.

Just because you don't have the most expensive shoes or clothes doesn't make you any less of person. If you want to wear the highest name brands that are expensive, then do it. If you want to wear a three dollar t-shirt and five dollar sneakers from Goodwill, then do it! The only opinion of you that matters is the one you give yourself. It's your life, dress and act however you please.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
