Thursday night, Hurricane Matthew made its first hit along the Florida Coast.
How big is this hurricane, really?
If you live in Florida, a really big one. Now at a category 3 storm, Matthew hit Florida with 120 mph winds and left tens of thousands without power. The states expecting “catastrophic” damage. Matthew is the most powerful Atlantic storm in since 2007. It’s forecasted to hit Georgia and the Carolinas this weekend. Earlier this week, it killed nearly 300 people in the Caribbean, most of them in Haiti. President Obama has declared a state of emergency for Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, after millions of people were told to evacuate coastal areas. Grocery store shelves are empty (so stock up on your milk and bread while you still can), and thousands of flights have been canceled. And to everyone who still hasn’t gotten the memo (cough cough, Vanilla Ice), Florida Gov. Rick Scott said time to hit the road Jack because, “this storm will kill you.” As long as we aren’t sugar coating things here.
How much damage is there?
This is only the first wave of the storm. It’s still unclear just how much damage Matthew could do in the U.S. What is clear is even your biggest umbrella isn’t going to cut it.
