As we all know, Hurricane Harvey has hit Texas with extreme force. Many families have lost all their belongings in the flooding and have lost their homes after being evacuated. However, the southern states are in the path of another powerful hurricane, Hurricane Irma. We have now seen that many animals are being left behind due to the hurricane looming in on them, so we need to be the voice of the animals who are shivering in the cold or standing in shock as water surrounds them.
Thankfully, many people in the entertainment industry who are donating millions of dollars to the Harvey Relief Fund, but I was looking more into the people who are not only speaking for the people in need, but also the families in need.
About a week ago, Kaley Cuoco posted a photo of her miniature horse on Instagram and mentioned how animals are being left behind. Many people did not appreciate her post because, to them, it sounded as if she did not care about the people who have lost their homes. But it is true. Many animals are stranded in homes will not move because they are in fear and do not know what to do.
I personally feel that the government/emergency relief groups focus more on the people that are in need and forget about the animals. Thanks to *blank*, they have donated $600 worth of dog/cat food and cat litter. I am a part of a group on Facebook that is called "You Know You've Worked At A Petstore When," and I saw a post that an extremely generous and caring pet parent donated three carts filled with supplies for pets affected by Hurricane Harvey.
So, bigs thanks to PetSmart and Petco Charities who are raising money and collecting donations for the pets in Texas.
There are many people, such as cowboys from Virginia, who are in Texas right now rounding up all the livestock that are roaming Texas because they are scared and don't know what to do. People from opposite ends of the country are going to help the animals (and people) who are in need at this dire time, especially with Hurricane Irma looming in on the states in the Gulf of Mexico.
What We Need To Change.
Our evacuation plans need to have steps to secure the safety of our animals. Meaning, at each disaster shelter, there needs to be plans for the pets of families. Families can't be forced to leave their pets behind when they are told to evacuate; it's just not done.
So, friends, go make kits for your pet that you can throw into the car in case of evacuation.
