How Winter Break Is Different When You're In College

You never thought you'd actually want to be back at school.

My winter break at college was about a month long and I still have about eight days left. Being home for this long was pretty strange when I was so used to living at college. I never thought about how weird it would be to have to adapt to my home environment again; a place I was so used to being for the first seventeen years of my life. Seeing my family every day rather than my friends and roommates was definitely different.

There's also a lot that you take for granted when living at home that you definitely do not when you return from college: like having a shower you don't need to wear flip flops in, a comfortable bed in a room that doesn't have other people sleeping in it, home cooked meals, and no responsibilities. All of these things you don't think much about when you're living at home, but when you're suddenly not living at home these are the things you look forward to the most.

Despite how wonderful being home is, you miss college a lot more than you would expect. All of my friends are at least an hour away and it's strange not seeing them every day. Just as strange as it was to not see my parents every day when I first got to college. You no longer have to wake up in a dorm room and walk to get breakfast, but you do miss having breakfast with hundreds of other people.

Winter break when you were in high school meant getting out of school a couple days before Christmas and returning a couple days after New Year's. That felt really long when you were in high school, but now you have a month at home when you're in college and you don't even know what to do with it. Celebrating holidays meant getting cool presents, but now you're more excited to see family you haven't seen in months. Winter break when you're in high school meant having more time to hang out with your friends, but now you're hanging out with friends you haven't seen since August or missing friends that live in other states.

When you were in high school the end of winter break just meant going back to dreaded school, but now the end of winter break means packing up all of your stuff and driving or flying back to what has quickly become your home away from home. Not to mention once you go back to college you'll be in completely different classes in a completely new semester. All new professors, all new topics, and all new people to meet. Winter break is one of the most exciting and looked forward to times when you're in college. But this break also ends up being bittersweet because you do end up missing a place you've grown to love so much.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
