I have never met a high school or college student who enjoys finals. No one likes to be forced to recall all the information that has been thrown at them for the last few months.
College finals are long and hard but worth the great grade after countless sleepless studying nights or just the passing grade. With the endless studying and work that goes into these end of semester tests, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed.
I have a few techniques I will be transferring from high school to college to help keep my stress low and my grades high. The obvious would be starting to study for the final about a week before the test.
Each day looking at different aspects of the class, including one day devoted to notes and the next, powerpoints created by the Professor and lastly skimming the wrap-up sections of each chapter. The next few days I go back and review with quizlet or notecards, the large concepts and also the concepts that gave me the most trouble.
With cumulative finals, you don't have to worry as much about the minute details that can be found on others tests. I find these tests easy to study for when all I need to focus on it larger ideas that were usually nailed into my head throughout the semester.
Preparing mentally for this week is another very important aspect to consider. Instead of multiple hour long study sessions I try to study for 45 minutes because that's about as long as my attention span will last and then I do something else like scroll Instagram or grab a snack for 15-20 minutes.
My studying becomes more effective this was so the breaks are worth feeling like studying just got a lot longer. Going along with my snack, I like to have my favorite snacks handy for those breaks. Making sure you are mentally prepared is just as important as being ready for the test questions.
