How To: Responding to Someone With a Different Opinion Than You

Let's learn to respect one another rather than put each other down.

How To: Responding to Someone With a Different Opinion Than You

There are many different views and opinions that people have about the presidential candidates this year. With the presidential election coming up quickly, it seems as though some people have forgotten the correct way to respond to those with difference in opinions. Some are strong Trump supporters, while others are on Hillary Clinton's side. Regardless of whether you are a Republican or Democrat, here's a list of Do's and Dont's if someone disagrees with your political opinion.

1. Do... respect other's opinions

If you respect my opinion than I will respect yours.

2. Don't... bash someone for thinking differently than you

Let's understand that not everyone will agree with you and your views.

3. Do... be open to hearing other people's side of the story

Allow people to explain their side of the story instead of trying to shut them down right away.

4. Don't... make fun of someone because they disagree with you

Meet Tom. Tom is a Hillary Clinton supporter.

Meet Sarah. Sarah is a Donald Trump supporter.

DO:

Tom: "Hi, I'm Tom and I support Hillary Clinton."

Sarah: "Hi Tom. I'm Sarah and I support Donald Trump."

Tom: "I disagree with your decision, but I respect your right of choice."

Sarah: "Thank you. I have a different opinion than you, but I respect your right of choice as well."

DON'T:

Sarah: "Hi, I'm Sarah and I support Donald Trump."

Tom: "Hi Sarah. I'm Tom and I think your opinion is absolute trash. I can't believe how stupid you are."

Don't be like Tom.

DO:

Sarah: "I don't like Hillary Clinton."

Tom: "I don't like Donald Trump."

Sarah: "I understand you feel differently than I do and I respect that."

Tom: "We have different views than one another, but that's okay."

DON'T:

Tom: "I don't like Donald Trump."

Sarah: "I can't believe your opinion is different than mine. If you don't agree with me than you're completely wrong."

Don't be like Sarah.

To bash on someone because of their political views would be like yelling at someone for having a different favorite color than you. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and we need to stop being so hateful to one another just because our views may be different than someone else.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
