I have mixed feelings about summer break. The break from the copious amounts of stress from college is obviously nice, but this break already feels long. It has been hard for me to handle such a slow pace and relatively open schedule compared to the “go go go" of college that I've become accustomed to and have actually learned to love.
In college, a ton of things can happen in one weekend or even just one night alone; time seems to fly by and what happens in your life seems to mesh together. Over summer break, you may have some exciting news or crazy occurrence happen once every few weeks. Because of this, summer can be boring and cause restlessness, despite internships, jobs and volunteering. I've found myself moping around the house wishing I were in Chapel Hill and making myself even more miserable and bored, so I decided to create a list of things to make this summer a little more interesting.
Embrace these weird ideas and DO THEM because they are fun. Step outside of the box and out of your comfort zone.
- Make an epic slip 'n slide with tarps. Forget about the dinky 20-foot ones from Walmart.
- And then have an intense water balloon and water gun fight.
- Or make some dope tie-dye shirts or pants and pretend to be a hippie for a few hours.
- Create and film a bizarre movie with your friends, complete with weird characters, a random setting and just a straight up insane plot line.
- Paint a portrait of your best friend while they paint one of you. Maybe make them ugly on purpose if you want a good laugh.
- Get lost in your own hometown.
- Visit those podunk, tiny museums in your hometown.
- Make up a holiday, go to a shopping center and tell people to celebrate.
- Go to an antique or second-hand shop. You will find something cool, guaranteed.
- Volunteer at an animal shelter. Do good while playing with doggies.
- Go camping and don't shower for a few days (just get as dirty as possible, actually).
Get creative and don't waste your summer being bored!
