Not everyone has the natural gift of being able to make any situation awkward. Which is a shame because if utilized properly it gives you the power to do some real insignificant damage. Here are five everday situations and how to make the most out of them.
1. Give Them a Wink
Hypothetically, you're sitting by the window at Starbucks and you see someone back into another car while trying to parallel park. If the offender is a decent human being they will examine the car to see if any damage was done, and then their next natural reaction should be to look around to see if anyone noticed. This happens so frequently to city drivers that most of them don't even think twice about it, this is where you come in. As soon as they see you, you're first instinct will be to look away, don't. Instead, hold eye contact, nod at the car and wink.
2. Break all the Social Norms
This works well in classrooms, high school hockey games, church, public transportation, fast food restaurants and especially movie theaters. Sit down right next to them, that's all you have to do. Works every time.
3. Tell Them What They Don't Want to Hear
Next time a cashier says "hi, how are you," respond with "honestly, not too good. It's been a long day, how are you?" It's simple yet jarring, and you'll always get a different response.
4. Stop Dogs on the Sidewalk
Next time a dog and their owner walks past you, start petting the dog and talking to it. Ask them if they want to hang out or maybe catch a movie sometime. Whatever you do don't acknowledge the human.
5. Make Elevators Even Worse
Start with something simple, like a comment about the weather. Odds are there's going to be at least one person who will make the mistake of responding to you. Turn to face them and try to start a conversation with them. Everyone will hate you.
Now go forth and prosper my friends, or just watch Netflix and imagine doing it.
