Some are still anticipating the infamous day, others have already gone through it. Luckily, I was one of the few that got it done over a week ago. It’s most definitely a day, or few, that will continue to live in infamy. Believe me, you want to take it from someone that has recently experienced it herself; follow these few steps and move-in day will (hopefully) go smoothly!
1. Parents are always right.
If you know me, or my parents, you know that I may have been somewhat of a stubborn child, to say the least. But, this is the one time I will actually admit it: parents are always right. When it comes to move in, they for sure know what they are doing. Just give them a chance and take their advice. It's definitely beneficial in the long run. Plus, once you get acclimated, you can rearrange things to fit what you like best.
2. The multiple trips are worth it.
After registering at Bed, Bath & Beyond at home, I knew I would have to make another trip once I got to Austin. After the second time, I thought I was through. I was wrong. In the end it totaled about four trips to Bed, Bath & Beyond, two to Target, a few to Home Goods, etc. Although extremely tiring, every single trip was definitely worth it. As move-in moves along, you realize a few more things you need here and there. My advice: take the time to make as many trips as you need.
3. Storage is key.
During those multiple visits to various stores, my mom would constantly purchase different bins for storage. At first I questioned why I would need over 10 different types of storage boxes if I have different places in my room to keep all my things. I decided to take my own advice, and instead actually listened to my mom; I couldn't be happier! You really don't realize how little space you have; believe me, over-packing is a real thing.
4. Put the phone down!
I can level with you, I'm addicted to Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, GroupMe and the million other social media apps. If it's not on app, it's IMessage, a group text, etc. As hard as it is, just put the phone down. Every five minutes I would stop what I was doing to pick up my phone and check-out what was going on, solely due to instinct. This just made the process a lot longer and way more inconvenient. Once again, I took my parents' advice, and put down my phone. You can't even imagine how much more you can get done when you put your phone down for a solid hour.
5. Know that the tears are inevitable.
Of course, a big part of the moving-in process is the goodbye. It makes the goodbye part a lot easier if you simply understand that tears are inevitable. Personally, I'm an emotional person, so I knew that I would be sad to see my parents leave. The second my parents and I stepped into the elevator to lead them out, my mom's tears started. When I saw my dad's eyes well up, that was it. Goodbyes are always the hardest, but I've only been here for eight days and already, I couldn't be happier!
