When you don’t know what to do life can be difficult to navigate. Lots of people barrage you asking you questions like what you want to do in life, what you want to major in, where you want to live and sometimes the best answer you have is I don’t know and sometimes that’s okay. Part of being young is learning about everything. Learning about different cultures, learning about different jobs and most importantly, learning about yourself.
So what do you do when you reach a point in your life when you know what you should do but not what you want to do? Over everything else, the first thing to do is relax. Eventually, things will work out either the way you want or sometimes even better. The second thing to do is to build off of what you already know. Do you like art and science? Try a design theory class. Do you like sports and writing? Take a sports journalism class. Do you like a business, but aren’t sure if it’s for you? Try a business internship. Now you can figure out what you like and dislike and still get credit for it.
There are plenty of things to do to discover what you like. Go to museums, go dancing recitals, walk through the park. If you don’t know what to do than almost anything can be an inspiration. Keep your mind occupied with the things you like but open to other’s suggestions. Talk to friends, siblings, family members, teachers, and even consult the internet.
Overall the third and the best thing to do is try something new. The easiest way to never figure out what you like or what you want is doing what you’ve always done. If you stay where you are, you will never get anywhere. It’s easy to stay in your comfort zone, but if you do, how far can you expand your horizons? With effort and time, it’s easy to figure anything out. Sometimes, knowing what you want comes naturally especially for people who want to be doctors or lawyers and engineers.
But if you are currently doubting yourself and don’t know what direction to take in life, that’s alright. There are some people who are much older and still haven’t figured out what they want to do. You are still young. You have plenty of time ahead of you, so don’t feel that you need to pressure yourself into figuring yourself out within a specific time frame. Nothing good has ever come from rushing. Just be yourself and things will come naturally.
