The Key To A Wealthy Mind For The Broke College Student

“Wealth is the ability to fully experience life.” – Henry David Thoreau

There are some things in life that we simply cannot control: war, natural disasters, gas prices, balding. Even with all of our might, the seemingly powerful influence these barriers have on us is astonishing. As fortunate as I feel to call myself a college student, I’ve experienced many barriers during my first (and now second) semester thus far. This includes the ultimate struggle to maintain a well-nourished bank account. You’ve probably heard the sighs and grunts of missed opportunities, and know the stories all too well. Asking a full-time student to juggle classes, studying, clubs, sports, sleep, and a social life is tough to manage alone. But to keep the cash rolling in, and the stress hanging low, with a job on top of it all? There just isn't enough time in the day.

So we may not be able to bring in the income without lashing against our sanity. But what if I told you there was a way to feel like a million bucks, all through the power of your own mind? It might not sound as inviting, but trust me on this one. Take that leap of faith to experience the treasures you’ve had under your nose all this time. Here’s how you can start.

1) The key to feeling wealthy is the decision to feel wealthy.

The mind works in mysterious ways, but one thing is for sure: it is essential to aim for a goal with open arms and a determined attitude. What, or who, drives you to be more than yourself, more than just another friendly face in the world? Where do you seek motivation? It takes a committed individual to seek success. Thinking, and most importantly saying, you will feel wealthy will work wonders. Start jotting down goals for yourself, or take this time to have a deep talk with a good friend.

2) One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

After accepting your potential, try to wiggle yourself into another person’s shoes. This one is all about perspective. Be willing to do what it takes to seek the luxury in brands you’ve never heard of before. One day your unknown style might become the latest trend. Don’t let your money determine your wealth, and steer clear from judging the wealth of others.

3) I can see clearly now, the rain has gone.

It’s going to be a bright, bright, sunshiny day if you keep your chin up and your spirits high. Turn obstacles into opportunities by saying “yes” a little bit more. Never pass up an opportunity that may benefit your future self. Stay educated, especially with worldly events, and learn how others are able to stay positive throughout the madness.

4) You’ve got a friend in me.

Friendship and the strength of a helping hand are more than anything we could ever need. Surround yourself with encouraging influences and those who will only lift you higher. Specifically, stay on the lookout for a mentor figure who attracts that same gift of a wealthy mind as you do. And when the time comes, you could be the teacher that someone is desperately in search for.

5) Live simply and simply live.

At first, the idea of living simply may sound… simple. Try not to dive into this concept too quickly. The art of living simply is something not even I know how to accept just yet. I’m sure many of us are wondering how we can skip out on the regular morning coffee run or pass on the spontaneous trips to the mall. Start off slow by creating a harmless challenge for yourself. Ask yourself this question, “How long can I go without purchasing an item I do not need?” You might be surprised with the results.

6) Remind yourself that there is more to life than untold riches.

Many of us are well aware that an ultimate motive towards human enlightenment is being the best we can be. But sometimes we get so caught up in being the best that we forget to realize our breaking points. Before deciding to chew more than you can swallow, question the importance of the matter. “Is this really worth my effort? By accepting this challenge, will I find myself in a happier state of mind?” Your self-worth is on the line.

There is so much more to life than digging up past “get rich quick” schemes. It’s time to realize that the real wealth in life, the wealth we should all prize on a pedestal, is the potential we see in ourselves. So to all the college students out there just like me, let’s agree with my one last word of advice. Stop worrying about the indefinite, and cherish what we have here and now.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
