How To Entertain Yourself During A Chill Quarter

Senior Spring, if done "right," is a great season of few commitments and lots of fun before starting a lifetime of adulthood. I somehow managed to swing a quarter with only one class, and it's pretty great. But, that being said, I now have a lot of free time, and I'm having a hard time figuring out how to spend it.

1) Read more

I always read a lot growing up. Like, multiple books per week. But then college hit, and I suddenly didn't have enough time to read anything. Now that I do have the time again, I've been spending nearly as much of it reading as possible, and it's been fantastic. Work through that list of books you've always wanted to read, or head to your local bookstore to look through their new bestsellers, and you'll be sure to enjoy yourself.

2) Actually work out

Finding the time to work out during college can be really difficult. There's always one more assignment to finish, one more reading to do, or one more exam to study for that take precedence over spending any time at the gym. But, with the free time of a senior spring, going to the gym can be both something fun to get you out of your house and something that's obviously really good for you. Summer beach bod, here you come!

3) Start a new hobby (or just spend time on one you already have)

I spent my whole life playing piano, but it kind of fell to the sidelines of my life once I started college and quit taking formal lessons. Now that I have the time again, I'm hoping to start playing semi-regularly again. Picking up a new hobby or getting back into an old one is a great way to spend your free time because it's both fun and fairly productive.

4) Catch up on all the sleep you've missed over the past four years

I'm involuntarily doing this a lot. Getting out of bed is just so difficult when you have no reason to.

5) Travel

A spring with a really chill schedule is the perfect time to spend your weekends travelling, because when else will you be able to? I just got back from Atlanta, I'm currently at home, and I'm going to Philadelphia this upcoming weekend, all because I can. Why not?

6) Cook better meals

You know how you always say that you want to eat more healthy and cook things that aren't canned soup, but just don't have the time? Well, guess what? You do have the time now, so make the most of it! Learn how to cook better so when the time comes that you're super busy again, you'll know how to do it without thinking too much about it! Plus it will make your spring much yummier.

7) Most importantly, have fun.

Because when else in your life will you have this kind of freedom?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
