Finals can be an extraordinarily hectic time of the year. People begin to freak out about grades, projects that are due, and tests to study for. Many don't find time to relax and destress. However, studying and working on projects all of the time is not healthy for anyone. Studying usually entails using your computer, but too much screen times is bad for the eyes and for the brain. Calm down, destress, and relax -- you will most likely get everything you need to done. Cramming studies, unless it's a project, is not helpful. You retain more information over time than you do by rapid fire studying. Here are some tips or things to do to help relax.
1. Remember to breathe.
A breathing relaxation technique GIF has recently gone viral. Check it out here!
2. Sick of sitting and studying? Get up! Go for a run or explore the town with your friends. Whatever you do, find a way to motivate yourself. Motivation is necessary when prepping for finals!
3. Some people may say having a diary is "lame," but expressing your thoughts and feelings on paper helps to remind you you're a person with feelings — not just a trained academic machine who produces projects and papers.
4. Take the time to do something with your bae! Even through busy times, it's important to find time for one another. Also, a date may just be the motivation and stress relief you need for finals and your date may be a good support!
5. Take a night off and go out and do something! If you're stressed and studying all the time, you deserve a night off! Go out with your buds and worry about studying in the morning. (Just remember not to go too hard -- you do still have studying to do!)
6. Lay down, shut your eyes, and listen to some music, but don't forget to set an alarm! You may end up falling asleep.
7. Step away from the screen! Go old fashioned, meaning write with pen and paper, read from an actual textbook, or check out books in the library on your research topic. Too much time at the computer is not good and will actually cause more stress.
8. Treat yourself! It's OK to indulge sometimes, just make sure it's not all the time.
9. Chew some gum! Gum helps to relieve anxiety, improve awareness, and de-stress.
10. Cook something! It will help to get your mind off studies for a bit, improve your cooking skills, and leave you with a (hopefully) delicious meal at the end.
11. Watch some funny viral videos on YouTube, but remember to limit yourself. Again, you still have some studying to do! Laughing will help you to relax.
12. Call a family member who has graduated and has a job. Remind yourself that these finals do not mean everything about your life. This is simply an end of the semester. If you're at a four year school, you have eight times for finals. Finals will most likely not make or ruin your life, though they are important.
You probably remember more than you think you do. Just go with what you know, trust your gut, and know that all other students, regardless of university or major, are probably going through the same emotions you are.
