How To Choose Happiness

Staying positive can be tough, but with three easy steps, you can choose happiness!

College is a hard time for all of us.

Whether you're a freshman trying to fit in and find yourself, or a senior who is excited to get started with your life (and still trying to find yourself, most likely), we all have days where we feel down, and we all have days where we feel like there's simply no hope for us.

However, soul buddies, I have a solution, and that solution is to simply choose happiness. I have been through times where I have felt like I could give no more, like the world was out to get me. But by doing the next few short, simple steps, I completely changed my life – and you can too!

1. Meditation is bliss

By meditating for a short time every day, it will change the way you perceive the world around you and will help you find that inner peace. By completely letting your mind go blank, you are giving the universe the attention it needs, which in turn will help you achieve the elated feeling we all hope to feel.

I've included one of my favorite spirit junkies to help you begin your meditation journey:

Or you can try this short, simple meditation: find a quiet spot to sit, breathe in through your nose for three beats, hold that breath for two, then out through your nose for three beats, again hold for two. Continue this mediation for five minutes.

2. Invite Prayer into Your Life

Meditation and prayer go hand in hand. Whether you believe in a higher being or not, prayer is a great way to find what your soul needs. Prayer is how we ask the universe for help and meditation is how the universe fulfills those needs. By starting your day with a short prayer, you are giving your needs over to the universe, be attentive, and your prayers WILL be answered.

3. Happy Thoughts, Happy Me

We're all guilty of it, even me, but having negative thoughts will only make room for negativity to grow from within.

Whether you are on your way to class and you like someone's outfit, or if you're behind someone in line for coffee who needs a few extra cents, go out of your way to be kind. Not only will this completely make a person's day, but you too will get such great, genuine feelings from this. Do not stop on the physical level, however, keep those positive vibes flowing within your thoughts!

Whether you try one or all three of these life enhancers, I can assure you that you will start to see things in a different light in no time. It's easy for us to get out of the grove and into ruts, but don't remain stuck! Ask the universe for guidance, and the universe will answer you. Stay connected to the outside world, because the universe works in very subtle, mysterious ways. Thank you all for your time and I wish you all the best of luck!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
