Okay so as many of you know a new movie came out this past weekend, How to be Single. Let me tell ya, this might be my new favorite movie. Not only did Rebel Wilson always keeps me laughing but there was also a great message in this mostly hilarious movie. I'm not going to ruin anything about the movie so don't worry about that. I went and saw this movie with a couple girl friends and it had me laughing until my stomach hurt. But then at the end of the movie the strangest thing happened... I was crying. I wasn't crying because it was sad or because I have allergies. I was crying because the main character in this movie was saying all the things I needed to hear.
It takes her the whole movie but she realizes that she doesn't need an ex or any new men in her life to make her happy. She wanted to be alone. She was finally doing all of these things that she had always put off because she was putting other people before herself. She had finally figured out what she wanted and when her ex came back she was able to walk away. So I'm sitting there in a theatre of people laughing and I'm crying. I was so happy for this fictional character because she finally discovered herself. I realized I wasn't sad, but I was crying because I was happy. And I wasn't happy for this character, I was happy for myself. There was something so encouraging about hearing everything I knew to be true repeated back to me. It was validation that everything I've been doing is actually the best thing for me.
It took her dating the wrong guys and falling back into old habits with her ex to realize that she was the one that needed a break. Rebel Wilson had a funny way of putting it, she said that Lucy fell into all of these guys "dick sand." As vulgar as that sounds she found it to be true. She believed everything each guy told her and would just completely toss herself aside for the attention of that one guy. She let them use her and throw her away if that meant just a few moments of "happiness." These guys told her exactly what she wanted to hear and she fell for it. You'll see what I'm talking about when you see the movie. It's something I think we can all relate to.
The movie isn't just for us single girls either though. It shows us that it's okay to walk alone but it can get lonely sometimes. It's okay to walk with someone by your side too. Once you truly know who you are then it's a great thing to find someone worth having as your life partner. This movie taught me that just because you're single doesn't mean you have to be alone. Because once you're alone for too long you actually start to feel lonely.
You're not alone. You have friends or maybe just one best friend to hold your hand when you feel like crying. Friends will always be there to fill the spaces where a boy can no longer be. Friends that build you up so that you truly know that you can face anything that comes your way. Friends that no matter what will always be on your side even if you're wrong, but they will let you know that you are actually wrong. Find the friends that will let you cry over a boy if you need to but never for too long. Because she knows that he's not worth your tears anymore. Find a friend that will take you out to get your mind off of things, but will take you home when you start to talk about him.
Once you've found that person then you can never truly be alone. Just because you're single doesn't mean that you have to be lonely. I've found that I feel less alone than I ever have. Good guys are hard to come by but true friends are even harder to find. So once you've found them, hold on tight and listen to their advice. I can promise you that they won't tell you what you want to hear but what you need to hear. So don't be single, be in a relationship. Or two or three. Because your best friends are the relationships that actually deserve your time. So grab a few of them and go see this movie because it might be up there with Bridesmaids. And maybe you can learn a lot about yourself like I did.
