Running, always running. From place to place, person to person, meeting to meeting we are always on the cusp of something new. Our minds constantly moving forward, focusing on what is yet to come instead of what is here. The present seems to knock on our foreheads saying “Hello, please let me in,” but still we run and race towards the expected. Maybe the word expected is the problem, we plan, process and then plan more, what happened to spontaneity. When did it become so scary to not have a plan?
One of the biggest problems at the end of our road is when we look back and realize our whole lives were spent looking forward. That society made it seem like if you weren't doing something or meeting someone your life was uneventful. Simplicity has been lost in the constant unnatural noise that our world generates, what happened to just being?
I find it interesting to travel to developing countries where the glamour and restlessness has yet to touch. Where people truly live moment to moment in the most simplistic ways, although not by choice. I have had eye opening conversations with families that do not know where their next meal is coming from nor can they afford for their children to have extravagant things, but they are some of the happiest people I have ever met.
We have become a society who glamorizes what you have rather than who you are. I do not want the fullness of my calendar to dictate the adequacy of my life. I think what we should encourage is how to be content with the simplicity rather than the extravagance. We do not need a grand life show in order to be entertained. The main attraction is right in front of you and I think it’s about time for society to just be where their feet are instead of always looking for the next best thing. There’s so much beauty in the times we take a break and breathe, we see everything we miss while running.
