When entering college or when you are about to leave college, there seems to be a universal fear of being an "adult." While there is no real step into adulthood and no one is ever truly an "adult," there are certainly some simple things you should learn how to do by yourself.
1. Changing a Tire
You don't have to do it fast like they do in "Cars," you just have to know how to do it if you need to. You never know when you might have a flat tire and your miles away from a mechanics. The one time I tested myself out it took me forever.
2. Cooking One Decent Meal
You can only live on ramen for so long and if you have someone coming over for a meal it might look a bit sad if you serve them microwavable macaroni and cheese. (Eat those in secret). Cooking can be a fun, stress relieving activity!
3. Laundry
I sometimes don't follow the laundry rules but I have seen a few people in college about to use bleach instead of detergent. Learn the different or you will ruin your clothes. They even make detergent pods so you don't have to measure anything.
4. Cleaning
I hope you know how to clean by now but learn how to REALLY clean, not just that surface stuff. If you live on your own you are going to have to deep clean every once in a while so get ready. A clean house is a happy house.
5. Taxes
I know they don't teach us this in school but it's important (unless if you Donald Trump apparently). Or least learn how to use Turbo Tax or be lucky and have someone in your family who has a degree in accounting.
6. News
Just keep up on the news somehow so if someone asks you something you can pretend like you keep up with current events. Frankly, I just use the trending sidebar on Facebook. Although you actually probably should know what's going on in the world because it could effect you and your life.
7. Holding a Conversation
Learn how to have small talk. It is awful but sometimes necessary. I talk about shampoo or there is always the go-to, the weather. Every adult has to learn this skill and you will get through it.
8. Dressing Yourself
You need to know how to look presentable for those special occasions such as job interviews or work meetings. Those sweat/yoga pants and baggy t-shirt are not going to work.
9. Changing Your Oil
To be honest, I'm not super into cars but I know changing your oil is important in order to prolong the life of your engine. All you have to do is drive your car to the mechanics/auto shop and ask for an oil change. It's as simple as that.
10. Faking a smile
You are going to have to deal with some people you don't like so learn how to fake a smile. Or at least look like you don't want to murder them.
11. Breathe
Here is a secret, no one is really an adult. Most people don't know what they are doing. Just keep swimming and you'll get somewhere in the end.
