How The All Woman Project is Changing How We View Models
All Woman Project

I am All Woman.

This is the slogan and hashtag of the All Woman Project, a project aimed at inspiring women worldwide to love and accept themselves, flaws included. The All Woman Project was started by Clementine Desseaux and Charli Howard, two models who were fed up by the unrealistic beauty standards often perpetuated by the modeling industry. Most women don't feel that the models in ads and magazines represent them, and Desseaux and Howard took issue with this fact. Desseaux, a size 12-14 model, has been modeling since the age of 12, and has long been an advocate for body positivity. Howard, a UK size 6-8, was dropped by her agency for being "out of shape". In a video that went viral, Howard strips down and discusses how she became obsessed with her weight and developed an eating disorder as a result of the pressure her agency put on her to constantly be thin.

On the All Woman Project instagram account (@allwomanproject) photos of models of different ethnicities, heights, and measurements are shared in all of their unretouched glory. Close up pictures of models' cellulite, stretch marks, scars, and other "imperfections" are shared with uplifting captions. Howard shares a photo of her stretch marks with the caption "love your stripes" in the photo below, and in another she shares a photo of her cellulite with the caption "Cellulite. Practically every woman has it, yet no one wants to talk about it. So here's mine. I used to hate it and feel so embarrassed and ashamed by it because I thought I was the only model/woman with it. WRONG!! Shooting the #allwomanproject taught me women get cellulite at ANY size..."

The All Woman Project also includes models such as Iskra Lawrence, the face of the Aerie Real campaign, Barbie Ferreira who also models for Aerie, Victoria Brito, Shivani Persad, and others.

According to NEDA, the National Eating Disorder Association, 42% of 1st-3rd grade girls want to be thinner (Collins, 1991). When asked if they were afraid of being fat, 81% of 10 year olds answered yes (Mellin et al., 1991). There is an enormous issue regarding body image for young girls growing up in this world, and it is almost impossible to be unaffected by the images of what we believe is beautiful. It is almost impossible to accept and love yourself in a world where you constantly compare yourself to others. The modeling industry has made progress, but there is still much more work to be done.

Let the All Woman Project convince you, beauty is bigger than a stretch mark or the size of your clothes.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
